Abominations

By T.R. Stones

Prologue

The room trembled as the door took another blow from the intruders on the other side. Lorrell clutched her newborn baby close to her chest. She knew why they had come. They wanted her life, to be able to take the power that they thought would surely come to her, but they would never get it, she would never let that happen, not if she intended her baby to live. Another knock, but this one was gentler, kinder. It also came from behind her instead of in front, so he had come after all. Lorrell pushed at the wall and the trick wall slid back smoothly and with ease.

“Dear friend, you were listening after all.” Lorrell gave a faint smile to see a man such as Cian coming to a place like this to come to her rescue. Cian gave her a scolding glower. “Well when one fine young lady such as yourself says she is contemplating a suicide mission one does tend to pay attention. Especially if said young lady is you…” Cian gave a brief glance to the child in her hands and then motioned towards the hidden exit.

“Shall we?”

Lorrell raised her brow as another deafening blow shook the room. “Ah, it seems you were not entirely paying attention.” It was Cian’s turn to raise a brow.

Hugging her beautiful baby girl closer Lorrell dropped her smile. Tears formed around the edges of her eyes and a look of determination and dread stuck dead on her face. “I have to do this Cian, there is no other way. They’ll kill me anyway if not now than later. I have too many weaknesses…too many ways to destroy my heart…” She looked down to her baby girl. She whispered, “They can’t know she exists Cian, they can never find her, you know what they want and you know what they are willing to do to get it. Please Cian you have to promise me that you will keep her safe, that you won’t let them find her.”

“Lorrell, I don’t understand, what do you mean, what do the Solci have to do with this mere baby?”

Her eyes shot to his then, pleading with what was left of his vampiric soul.

“Please…don’t let them take her.” Lorell’s tears finally broke free over her cheeks and slid down. That’s when he realized it. This was not a mere child, this was Lorrell’s child; the product of a marriage between a Lady of the Vampiric Aristocracy and a young doey-eyed human man. Cian closed his eyes softly and took a deep breath. It all made sense now. The reason there were shouts and bangs coming from the other side of the door; the reason why Lorrell was so desperate for Cian to take the child to safety. Lorell was an abomination. After the Aristocracy caught wind of the said child, it would be executed as well as Lorrell with it. She could not keep it hidden forever especially now that the Solci knew that Lorrell had been chosen for, knew the power that would be given to her the moment her life force ceased to exist in this world.

Cian opened his eyes with pity in his heart for his old friend. She was doomed, she knew it as well as he. She would be killed one way or the other. Cian stepped closer to Lorrell and swept her long black curls away from her face. Her magenta—once blue—eyes glistened. The power was already making its claim on her. More tears streaked down her porcelain skin, over her pink tinted cheeks.

“So you understand Lorrell, what’s happening to you?”

Lorrell changed then. Her shoulders straightened, her chin jutted out in a new found confidence as she wiped the tears off of her face.

“I do Cian, and I also know what it is I must do.”

There was a harsher bang against the door and the room shook as bits of the ceiling fell over them. Lorrell snapped back with purpose, shoving the child into Cian’s arms and beckoning him on. “Go Cian, keep her hidden. No one must know of her existence. Do whatever it takes to keep her safe, I’d prefer if she was kept with her father. He already knows about her and is expecting us tonight, please tell him I am sorry...” She paused a moment struggling to keep her confident composure. She recovered quickly.

“Explain it to him, he’ll be there for her. If you’ll watch over them they should be more than safe.”

Cian gave her a curt nod and made his way to the hidden passageway. He stopped just before entering the dark whole. “Is there no other way Lorrell? Could you not use the power against them?”

Lorrell smiled. Her eyes turned warm in the golden dim of the room and once again filled to the brim with tears. “No, there are too many of them, I’m afraid they have sent the cavalry. I must finish this and prevent them from stealing more than they already have.” She turned back to the door as it began to chip and splinter in various places. “One day you may tell her of me and my purpose for leaving her… but for now dear friend it is time for you to go.”

Cian bowed to her back in a silent reverence of her bravery. There were few he knew of left in the Vampire world who were so selfless. She was a strong soul and her legacy would live on through this young little child.

“Oh and Cian there is one more thing…”

Cian straightened as Lorrell did a half twist with her torso, so she was looking over her shoulder to see him. Her gaze fell to the bundle in his arms.

“Her name is Sophie.”
